David and Lisa are TEACHING this summer . . . 2010 . . . in the incredibly beautiful BERKSHIRES: Childrens' Music Workshops at KRIPALU center for yoga and health , Stockbridge, Massachusetts July 5 - 9, Monday-Friday, 4 nights: Build Instruments, Record Songs, and Make a CD! For kids ages 11-14. This music workshop for kids involves using recycled and low-cost materials for building percussion, wind, and string instruments. In addition to creating an orchestra, kids will learn playing techniques for each instrument and compose and record their own original songs, culminating with a finished CD. The things that kids will learn in this fun program include Ensemble playing and physical coordination, Counting and rhythm, Creative writing, Simple notes, Musical arrangement, and Basic recording techniques. Kids will work collaboratively to create music for solo and mixed ensembles. This music will then be recorded and mastered on a laptop computer during the workshop. The program will culminate with a CD release party, and each participant will take home a CD and the instruments they've built. Program instructors Lisa Karrer and David Simons, both accomplished musicians, will provide all necessary materials. Note: Children in this program must be accompanied at Kripalu Center by a parent/adult who is registered for a program or R&R. This music, performance, and MASK-MAKING workshop with Lisa Karrer and David Simons encompasses world music traditions, stories, and dynamic performances such as the Balinese Monkey Chant, based on the Hindu epic The Ramayana. During the workshop, kids will build instruments and learn to play world music rhythms, Gamelan, and songs on a variety of homemade instruments. They will also create a menagerie of imaginative masks and puppets. Using these materials, the group will explore ancient myths, and then create and perform new stories with shadow puppets and masked characters that feature their own original music. The program culminates with an ensemble parade and performance, and all participants get to take their puppets, masks, and instruments home with them. All necessary materials are provided. For kids and preteens ages 5- 12: In between swimming, hiking and listening to bird songs, kids create their own orchestra, build musical instruments, learn playing techniques, rhythm and improvisation games, and movement with music.
